Hawthorne HAL
Instructor: Mrs. Remmers
Welcome to
 Hawthorne HAL Happenings

Summer is a great time to stretch the minds of High Ability Learners.  Allow students to help plan a vacation. They can plan the route, research the final destination or side trips along the way.  Figure out the cost of the trip, including travel costs, hotel/camping costs, food, and expenses for excursions and extras.  While on the road, keeping a journal (written or drawn) of each day's events along with new vocabulary learned from billboards, park ranger talks or the book they choose to read keeps reading skills sharp.
Not leaving town, that is okay... There are many opportunities for great fun here in Hastings.  The library, Hastings Museum and the school district offer activities all summer long to keep brains moving.  Take the time to read flyers coming home or call to find out more information.  However, it is a balancing act.  Allow your child this time to engage in exploring their own backyard or near by park, as well.  It is just as important for HAL students to learn to manage their own time and resources as it is to be involved in structured activities.
   HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!

Books for Students
The Gifted Kids' Survival Guide by Judy Galbraith
This is an excellent book which defines "gifted" and tackles questions students have about who they are and why.  This book includes kid friendly language and artwork.  It is fun and engaging.

Allens toy deptartment
In the basement of Allens on 2nd street there is a great resource for parents looking for gifts or brain toys.
They have a super selection of quality games that take logic or thinking skills.  There is a couple circlular book displays that contain wonderful logic puzzles and brain teasers. Excellent use of a gifted brain.
